About
John Clark
I began my studies in the industrial design department at the Syracuse University College of Art, dreaming of becoming a car designer, ultimately graduating with a degree in Environmental Design.
My career started as an intern with Peter Walkerof Sasaki Walker & Associates, which ultimately led several of us to found The GNU Group—a Bay Area studio renowned for dimensional design.
Some years later I moved to Switzerland to attend the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, studying with such design masters as Armin Hofmann, Wolfgang Weingart and Kurt Hauert. The campus in Basel contained several Jean Arp sculptures, a great sculptor from nearby Alsace.

In 1990 I returned to Switzerland as an instructor at Art Center (Europe) and was appointed Department Chairman for Communication Design. At that same time I started my design practice Looking.
My evolution from dimensional design to sculpture began with dimensional representations of company and institutional brands. These project included bas relief sculptures, dimensional logotypes and symbols, and evolved into various type of monuments. All of these projects involved professional craftsmen to fabricate them, in the various available material and technologies.
About 2004 I began to dig back into my undergraduate and graduate art education and began working in hot glass, under the business name ArtGlas, and metalwork, and stone. While starting in travertine marble, I gradually found my way into albaster, and ultimately the high quality Italian Ice Alabaster from the Volterra Quarry near Pisa.
